Be Careful When Sharing Vacation Information Online

June 30th, 2009

Many of us look forward to summer for several different reasons. One of them is the all important and much anticipated summer vacation. It’s perfectly natural to want to talk about upcoming plans with friends and share the excitement. However, the definition of “friends” has changed in recent years.

With the growing popularity of social networking sites, sharing this type of information has never been easier or more public. Most people who subscribe to a social networking site have their profile protected so only people they choose can view it. Some people forget to take this all important step when setting up a profile, though. Sometimes a “friend” will inadvertently share information with their network of “friends” and so on and so on. Also, there are sites like Twitter where there is no option to protect your profile. It’s open for everyone to browse and see your information.

Posting vacation plans can be an open invitation for burglars.

Please remember that social networking sites don’t create new crimes. They just offer new tools for criminals as they become more technically savvy. The Fifth Precinct has not yet had any reports of suspects who use this method. If you take basic precautions, you can drastically reduce the opportunity for burglars. Here are some basic safety tips to prevent residential burglary while you’re on vacation:

• Let trusted neighbors know that you will be gone and ask them to bring in any flyers or other items that are left on your doorstep
• Suspend mail and newspaper delivery service for the time you will be out of town
• Set up timers on lights both interior and exterior, if possible
• Consider installing motion detectors
• Ensure that all doors and windows are securely locked before leaving the house

Please pass this along to neighbors, friends, and family. Thank you and have a great summer!
