Public Works Update
Larry Matsumoto provided maps, handouts, and an update on the status of road improvement projects for the city of Mpls. Since MNDot got approximately 2 months behind on Lyndale Avenue resurfacing of Nicollet Avenue between 58th and 61st has been delayed until next spring. Nicollet Avenue will spot-filled with asphalt in the meantime. Tax assessments to affected Nicollet Avenue residents have been postponed until 2010. Resurfacing of 60th street between Chicago Avenue and I-35W has proceeded as planned and should be completed shortly. Larry pointed out on the map that the “Oak Hill” area which contains several streets near the Oak Hill cemetery within Windom that will be resurfaced next spring. Tax assessment rates for 2009 will be set in November so Larry does not know what they will be at this time. Larry and the City Assessor will be requesting time to present information to Windom residents at one of the spring meetings. A mailing will be sent out to affected residents notifying them of the City’s plan to resurface Oak Hill. It was suggested that Larry and the Assessor could attend the bi-annual meeting in May which is usually at the Russian Museum of Art. The Windom Community Council will follow-up with Larry to let him know the date of bi-annual meeting once it has been set.
Crime Prevention Updates and Information
Amy Lavender, Crime Prevention Specialist for the Windom area, provided updates and handouts (home assessment, becoming a block leader, etc.) on crime in the Windom area. “Trackable” crime is down 25% in Windom from January 2008 – September 2008 compared to the same time period in 2007. Amy talked about the home invasion on the 5600 block of Blaisdell a few weeks ago where a 65-year old male and his adult son were assaulted and robbed. Katie Louis and Noah Day representing the 5600 and 5700 blocks of Blaisdell, respectively reported that they have seen increased evidence of mobile drug dealing during past weeks. Amy urged people to still call 911 even if the car leaves right away and to get as many details as possible including the date, approximate time, the location, a description of the vehicle and its occupants along with a description of the suspicious activities. Amy has a “Dear John” letter she can send out to the registered owner of the vehicle involved letting them know that someone has reported it as possibly been involved in illegal drug activity. There have also been a few recent complaints of door-to-door solicitors who have not shown their solicitors license when asked. Amy will follow up on this issue and send out email correspondence as needed. Amy will be leading a free safety workshop Thursday, October 16th at Washburn (see handout).

December 9th, 2008
It’s that time of year to start thinking about the Neighborhood Policing Plans with the Minneapolis Police Department. Please visit http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/police/outreach/Pct5NeighborhoodPolicingPlans.asp to check the Neighborhood Policing Plan for your neighborhood from 2008.
Lt. Chris Hildreth and I will be taking care of the MPD updates, including the crime statistics. The end-of-year totals should be compiled in the early part of January.
What we would love from you is feedback on what your neighborhood’s concerns are – what you as a safety committee/board have seen and/or what you’ve heard from residents – as well as any updates on what you as a community are interested in committing to for 2009.
Please get feedback to me by January 5, 2008by whatever means is most comfortable and convenient; email is ideal but I’m happy to talk about it over the phone, at meetings, or even receive letters through the mail or dropped off at the Precinct addressed to Amy Lavender. If you’re happy with the way it is/have no changes, please just let me know.
We greatly appreciate all the hard work you do in your communities, as well as the time it takes you to respond to this request. It’s very important to us to know what the neighborhood’s perspective is on the crime and safety in your area.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
Enjoy the holidays!
Thank you,
Amy Lavender
